The UK's leading rail transport digest has featured the Bow Group's proposed route for HS2 in its latest edition.

Writing in Rail Technology Magazine, Tony Lodge the Bow Group's  Energy, Transport and Environmental Policy research fellow commented:

"It is difficult to think of any other major project where bolting on bits here and there has arrived at a well-designed, costeffective and elegant solution. If anything, this approach only serves to exacerbate the original flaws of HS2 Ltd’s proposals and the project to deliver Britain’s second high speed railway must be reassessed.

Writing for the Evening Standard on the 11th January Anthony Hilton has advocated the adoption of the "Bow Group Route" for HS2.

Everyone accepts that Britain needs to modernise its infrastructure if it is to maximise its chances to remain competitive in the world. Most people accept too that internal transport links need to be significantly improved if businesses in the Midlands and the North are to have an equal opportunity to flourish, which means among other things better and faster links to the main markets in continental Europe.

While still in its relative infancy, the Coalition Government has some notable achievements, but ultimately it will be judged on the ability to facilitate growth in the UK economy, and in this area it has not achieved.

We are sad to announce the death of Sir Timothy Raison, member of the Bow Group and former editor of Crossbow, who died on November 3 aged 82.

Prior to his election as MP for Aylesbury in 1970, Sir Timothy was a prolific editor and journalist. Beginning his work at the Picture Post, he then moved on to the New Scientist. At the same time, he edited Crossbow and founded the social science magazine New Society, having already edited the Eton Chronicle.

As a supporter of an elected House of Lords, an advocate of a higher aid budget and an originator of the World Refugee Year in 1960, Sir Timothy gained a reputation as being on the Left of the Party. Described as an intellectual who had the common affliction of being able to “see all sides of an argument”, he served as Under-Secretary for Education and Science, Minister of State at the Home Office and Minister for Overseas Development. He remained on the backbenches from 1986, where he continued to exhibit a paternalism which combined concern for the welfare of the less fortunate with traditional views on the family and society. He stood down from Parliament in 1992.

Out of Parliament, Sir Timothy continued to contribute to public life in roles such as chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority and member of the Council of the National Trust. He was knighted in 1991.

Members are invited to contribute memories of Sir Timothy using the form at http://www.bowgroup.org/contact-us

The new Chairman Ben Harris-Quinney wrote on Conservative Home shortly after the election of his team to set out the importance of reform in the group, and the value the group can, and must have, in the Conservative family. Must the home of free-market conservative thought disappear into the ether?

Benjamin Harris-Quinney is the new Chairman of the Bow Group. Previously he was Political Officer and Chairman of the Foreign Policy & Security Committee. A week after Lady Thatcher’s 86th birthday, one of the institutions that formed a pillar of the philosophy of her government, and of many before it, faces a crisis of existence.

The Bow Group is sixty years old this year, and rather than a celebration of its great history, the institution is battling is on the precipice of its own demise. Why?

The Bow Group were delighted to welcome back Secretary of State for Culture Media & Sport Jeremy Hunt, to deliver the keynote speech at our annual summer terrace reception at the House of Commons.

The event could not have occured at a more febrile time of Parliamentary intrigue, on what was to be the final day of the term. Following the day's committee hearings the timing of Jeremy Hunt's appearance was welcomed by members keen to ask questions of their own on the topic of telephone hacking, media plurality, BBC funding and the Olympics.

The Bow Group's Political Officer Ben Harris-Quinney commented that "Jeremy Hunt is most welcome back at the Bow Group, particularly if his timing is always as good as today. I think many of our members are both concerned and fascinated by the nature of events that have sent shock waves through the nations media and government. Jeremy has acted as always with the utmost composure and professionalism, and I can think of no one better to give the Bow Group fair and frank opinion on unfolding events."
