JEREMY CORBYN may be a “nice chap but he’s a political lunatic” a former Tory MP blasted, as she defended Theresa May’s election campaign.

Former MP for Maidstone and Daily Express columnists Ann Widdecombe described the General Election results as “sad” as she said Mrs May’s election tactics should have worked.

Speaking to ITV, Ms Widdecombe said: “The sad thing is that I think Theresa tried to run this campaign in the manner that has served her so well at Westminster.

“She has always been someone that stayed above the fray.

“The obvious example of that was during the referendum, she was the Home Secretary, the biggest issue was immigration, she just stayed out of it.

“I think that she tried to translate into a General Election, and be a bit aloof from it all, as she is at Westminster.

“And it didn’t work, and it should have worked because Corbyn may be a nice chap but he’s a political lunatic, and we really should not be in this position today.”

The claim comes as Mr Corbyn told Sky News the “losers” of the election was the Conservative Party as he said the Labour Party was prepared to form a government if the Tories and DUP’s bid to create a coalition fails.

Mr Corbyn, who insisted the election results were a victory for Labour, said: “We are ready to do everything we can to put out programme into operation, there isn’t a Parliamentary majority for anybody at the present time.

“The party that has lost in this election is the Conservative Party. The arguments the Conservative Party put forward in this election lost, I think we need a change.

“We gained seats in every region in the country, we won three million more votes on a much higher turnout, I think that is a very good result.”

Mr Corbyn said the decision must be taken by Parliament about the future of the country, as Parliament is currently hung due to Labour’s unexpected success against the Tories.

He said: “What we were elected to do was to put forward a programme which is about ending austerity in Britain, is about supporting our NHS and social care service, is about proper funding ion our education service and is about improving the lives of people in this country.

“We are ready to serve this country, that is what we fought the election for and this is the programme we out forward.

“We are offering to put forward the programme on which we fought the election. We have done no deals and no pacts with anybody… and everybody can see the huge increase in our support because of the way we conducted the election and the comprehensive nature of the programme we put forward.

“Parliament must meet and Parliament will then have to take a decision on what happens when a Government puts forward the Queen’s speech.”

Asked if Brexit talks should be delayed as a result of the General Elections, Mr Corbyn insisted negotiations had to go ahead in 11 days time.

Mr Corbyn said: “They are going to have to go ahead because Article 50 had been invoked. A government in office in 11 days time will have to conduct those Brexit negotiations.

“Our position is very clear, we want a jobs first Brexit, therefore, the most important thing is the trade deal with Europe.

“And I would have thought perhaps a good gesture from Parliament would be to vote now to agree that all EU nationals can remain in Britain.”
