Germany is a very young country and a very old people. The people do not forget their history. They know that every empire needs a history and where it has been written against them, so it must be corrected.

In 1940 the German Army found the rail carriage the original Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919.

28th June 1919. Remember that date.

The Versailles Treaty placed all blame on Germany for the Great War. It had to pay in soil, in life and in gold. Reparations as it was known. These reparations were not raised for the first time in 1919 but in the Armistice of 1918, the guns fell silent but war it still was, legally speaking.

The “November Criminals” caused a great fury to be unleashed amoung Germans. Humiliated, having to lose land and treasure for the first time in, well, over a century was a body shock and we know where it led. Germany was restored by the Congress of Vienna, the start of the Concert of Europe. The ideal of European unity around France and German is not new by any stretch of the imagination.

Which is why today’s vote in Westminster is so important. It will rightly reject a suboptimal deal negotiated by the German led EPP (President Juncker, President Tusk, President Tajani) and the UK. It was negotiated in November 2018.

Article 50 is meant to come to an end the 29th March and the UK parliament has previously voted to ensure this but there is now talk of an extension. Not a big one, oh no, just a little one. A salami thin extension but of course no later than the start of the next European Parliament on Tuesday 2nd July. Monday being a holiday and for staffers really the last working day of this Parliament is 28th June 2019.

Let’s just read that again.

The withdrawal agreement was signed 100 years after the Armistice of WW1, within two weeks of that date actually. It requires us to continue to pay into the EU for no say and risks Ulster being ripped from our union. This still requires the UK to acquiesce so there is still chance to avoid this especially if we know it is coming.

The Withdrawal Agreement would then become active on Friday 28th June 2019. Then the weekend comes and goes. Then on Monday the end of the European Parliament term is formally announced. Job done.

Utter humiliation, in the digital rail carriage of social media, 100 years to the day the Germans signed the Treaty of Versailles. A nice comfort for the EU who can see UK humiliation as a most unifying event.
