A Brief History of Lords Reform and the Next Steps Necessary to Reform the Membership of the Chamber

Bow Group contributor George Appleyard looks in detail at changes necessary to carry the function of Britain’s Upper House of Parliament, after concisely explaining the history of that body.

Notably, he explores three areas of change:

– First, it is necessary to make appointments more transparent to remove some contradictions that exist today between the Lord’s way of functioning and democratic principles.

– Second, for it to be a more efficient institution, it is necessary to limit the number of its members more.

– Third, peers must no longer be simply guaranteed a place for life, but rather the duration of their appointment should serve the common good.
