Britons Don’t Trust the Government to Vet Ukrainian Refugees, Says Bow Group Research Fellow

Mar 15, 2022 | Broadcast Media, News | 0 comments

The government has launched a scheme for members of the public to open their homes to Ukrainian refugees, but concerns remain over the Tory government’s ability to properly vet those taking up Britons’ hospitality, says Bow Group research fellow Benjamin Loughnane.

“One of the big problems of this is when you open up a new route to entry for migration, you tend to find that a lot of people turn up who aren’t coming from the place that you’ve opened it up to,” Bow Group Research Fellow Benjamin Loughnane told TalkTV.

“You need to have checks and balances in place to make sure people are actually coming from Ukraine in the first place.”

Mr Loughnane continued: “One of the reasons people aren’t throwing their doors wide open to these people is that they don’t trust the government to do that.

“They’ve looked at how asylum has worked in this country for the past few years. They look at how lax it is, how terrible the system is, and how inefficiently it’s run – with the people coming over the Channel in dinghies and not being returned – and they think, are the government actually going to do the due diligence or am I going to be opening my home to someone who we have no idea where they’re from?”

“We want to help Ukrainians, but we don’t want to help everyone in the world,” he said.
