Amidst rumours circulated in the media that moves were being made to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Number 10, Bow group Chairman Ben Harris-Quinney said that Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is only receiving “lukewarm” support as a potential replacement, and that a new challenger who appeals to the conservative movement could emerge from the backbenches.

Mr Harris-Quinney told The Express: “If Boris is to be replaced, the new leader would have to demonstrate clear daylight between them and this Government, and that may be what Sunak is doing.

“However, it is just as likely a new challenger will emerge from the backbenches, as the majority of Boris’ popularity slump is not due to Partygate, but his failure to deliver a conservative agenda.

“The conservative movement will be looking for a candidate like Suella Braverman, Sir Graham Brady or Esther McVey, who are trusted to deliver as a gold-standard conservative.”
