Royals Like Prince Charles Need to Follow the Queen’s Lead and Remain Politically Neutral, Says Bow Group Fellow

The next in line to the British throne and other younger royals are departing from Queen Elizabeth II’s decades-held political neutrality, which could adversely affect their public support, a Bow Group Fellow has warned.

Prince Charles recently faced criticism for expressing his strong opinions on man-made climate change, which has become a hot political issue, leading to the former advisor on Anglo-American relations to suggest that the younger generations of British royals are engaging themselves too much in political affairs. They should instead be following the lead of Queen Elizabeth II, who has maintained a solid stance of neutrality.

Speaking to The Express, Lee Cohen, research fellow for transatlantic affairs at The Bow Group, said: “Things appear to be increasingly moving away from the excellent example set by Queen Elizabeth who has seldom, if ever, put a foot wrong in the eyes of the public.

“The Queen has been criticised for being inscrutable in her opinion. But I believe, this has only enhanced her enduring popularity.

“Interestingly, people project their own political beliefs on the Queen – whatever opinions they hold, they imagine she shares.

“Take for instance her very neutral remarks when she expressed the hope that voters will ‘think very carefully about the future’ before the Scottish independence referendum.

“She didn’t give away an opinion but all sides could relate to her remark and no one was alienated.

“That is genius. Prince Charles and his successors should pay close attention to their matriarch’s instincts and style on this.”
