The Conservatives Should Consult the Public Mood Before Taking Action Against Boris Johnson, Says Bow Group Chairman

Apr 19, 2022 | Broadcast Media, News | 0 comments

Bow Group Chairman Ben Harris-Quinney has said that while there is no real mood amongst backbenchers to oust the prime minister at present, that could change, particularly if citizens use next month’s local elections to vocalise their displeasure with the Conservatives and Boris Johnson.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologised for attending a party during lockdown despite gatherings being prohibited. Mr Johnson maintained that he did not knowingly break the rules or intentionally mislead parliament, and rejected calls for him to resign as prime minister.

While those on the opposite side of the political spectrum have said Prime Minister Johnson should step down, Bow Group Chairman Ben Harris-Quinney has said that the only way Johnson would be forced out of Number 10 would be a backbench rebellion; but that, at present, isn’t likely.

Speaking to GB News, Mr Harris-Quinney said: “There are real questions that remain over Boris Johnson’s head and of course he is the one that knows best whether his actions have been right or not. But I sense no mood among backbenchers to oust Boris Johnson. That’s the only way he would be removed as prime minister.”

However, the Bow Group chairman noted that that mood “may change over the next few weeks” if more lockdown-breaking fines come in for the prime minister, or if the result of next month’s local elections show that the public mood towards Johnson has changed.

Harris-Quinney said: “Ultimately I think it will fall to the May elections to give an indication of what the country thinks, which is the most important thing.“

“I would caution, particularly with that election coming up so soon, against taking any action before that that doesn’t consult the public and doesn’t take the public mood properly,” he added.
