The Constellation of Right-Wing Parties Need to Come Together to Form a Proper Opposition and Hold the Govt to Account

Dec 22, 2021 | Broadcast Media, News | 0 comments

Bow Group chairman Ben Harris-Quinney has said that the several smaller right-wing parties could have a greater impact if they joined forces under a single leader, acting as a “proper opposition” to the Conservative government.

Ben Harris-Quinney made the remarks as the government continues to be beset by scandals, such as PartyGate. Meanwhile, Britons have been under government-imposed Covid restrictions for 19 months, with the Labour Party — the so-called Opposition — backing much of the government’s legislation and measures.

The Bow Group chairman told GB News: “The Conservative Party has been in power for 11 years, and we’ve had this constant recycling, where David Cameron was supposed to be someone who would take on Blair. He quickly dubbed himself the ‘Heir to Blair’.

“I remember campaigning in 2010 and doing lots of things to get the Blair/Brown government out, and we ended up with just another Tony Blair.”

Mr Harris-Quinney continued: “Then, we were supposed to get a Brexit government and what we got was a Remainer in Theresa May.

“Then Boris was supposed to come along and save the day and we have the same problem just a few years later.

“I think there’s a much deeper problem in the Conservative Party and I think the Conservative Party needs to urgently reconnect with its grassroots rates and the ideology of conservatism.

“But I also think we now have a constellation of parties on the right — Reform, Reclaim, Heritage, the SDP [Social Democratic Party] is now operating on the social conservative side of the spectrum — and I think those parties need to come together and form a challenge to the government in the same way UKIP and the Brexit Party did to focus the minds of the government and pull it back to conservatism.

“What we’ve seen in recent by-election results is these sorts of parties getting , six, seven per cent in the polls. If you put them all together and if they come all together, under a single leader, then we can start to get some proper opposition because the Labour Party is incapable of doing so, hold the government to account, and improve the government.”
