Speaking to GB News’s Mark Steyn after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bow Group patron Dr David Starkey said that the UK has been too preoccupied with illusions rather than ensuring energy independence.
Dr Starkey told GB News: “We have lived in this world of illusion. We thought that war was so last century. That violence was nasty. That we had really important things to do like worrying about the planet, which, of course, has left us completely open as we’ve destroyed our nuclear power.
“We’ve failed to develop our oil resources. We’ve thrown away our chance to frack. We’ve thrown away natural gas.”
The Bow Group patron continued to compare Europe’s fragile energy status to Rome’s dependence on its vulnerable waterways, saying: “The great empire of Rome ends when the barbarians cut the aqueducts. Putin can simply turn off the gas. He can just turn it off exactly as in 537, the aqueducts were cut and Rome changes from the capital of the world to a malarial-ridden village.”
“We’ve lost the sense of power. We’ve lost the sense that states depend on the ability to defend themselves,” Dr Starkey added.
