Daniel Kawczynski MP claims that it is up to Brexit Britain to take on Brussels

‘It’s Russian roulette’ Tory MP claims it’s up to Brexit Britain to ‘take on’ Brussels

A CONSERVATIVE MP and Brexit supporter has claimed it is up to Britain to “take on” Brussels and negotiate on behalf of future EU member states as well as the UK.

Daniel Kawczynski said that every EU country that has taken on the EU has not been successful.

The Conservative MP and Brexit supporter claimed if Britain was successful in negotiations it would “give succour and support to other countries to exert their sovereignty”.

He said: “What we have to remember is that we are not just negotiating for ourselves, we are negotiating for the rest of the continent of Europe because there will be further divisions within the EU.

“Whether it is countries being forced to adopt the Euro against their wishes or indeed whether it is certain countries wishing to assess leaving the European Union themselves.

“Every time a sovereign nation-state has attempted to take on the European Union, whether it is the referendum in Denmark, Ireland or France, the European Union has said ‘no, you must comply with what we want’.

“No country has successfully taken on the European Union and lived to tell the tale. If we do it, it will give succour and support to other countries to exert their sovereignty.”

Sky News host Adam Boulton pointed out they were discussing negotiating Brexit, and not taking on the EU.

The Conservative MP quickly replied: “Well it’s a game of Russian roulette.”

When asked about what kind of future customs settlement Mr Kawczynski would accept, the MP replied: “My constituents in Shrewsbury and the majority of the people of Britain voted to leave the European Union.

“That means taking back control, it means, being a sovereign nation-state and it means organising a trading agreement with the European Union.

“But, no customs union, no customs union which binds our hands and diminishes our sovereignty, that is not what the British people of this country voted for.”

It comes as Prime Minister Theresa May has clashed with her cabinet over the country’s future customs relationship with the European Union.

The House of Lords defeated the Government with 15 amendments in total to the Withdrawal Bill, which has kept the door open to the UK remaining in the customs union.

Mrs May repeatedly said the UK would be leaving the customs union and single market, but her customs partnership model was rejected by Brexiteers in her cabinet with Boris Johnson branding the plan “crazy”.

Brexiteers favour a “maximum facilitation” model – otherwise known as “MaxFac” – which uses technology and a trusted trader scheme to seriously limit the number of customs checks.

Speaking on Thursday last week, Prime Minister Mrs May said: “We have been very clear that we will be leaving the customs union and in future outside of that customs union be able to develop our own independent trade policy.

“As we look forward to developing our economic partnership with the European Union once we have left, it will be necessary for there to be arrangements as to how matters are to be dealt with across borders in relation to customs.”
